For about four more weeks, downtown Chico runs a schedule most residents only half-track: a Thursday night that pulls Main and Broadway into a market, a Friday night concert in City Plaza, and a rotating monthly theme that keeps the market from feeling like the same event every week. Then, on the last Friday of August, one of those two anchors quietly stops for the year.
If you already live here, the useful question is not whether to go. It is which of the remaining weeks to actually run the full stack, and which of the new dining anchors to fold in before the outdoor season closes.
The overlap window is shorter than it feels
The Thursday Night Market and the Friday Night Concerts only overlap for part of the year. The Thursday Night Market runs every Thursday between April 9 and Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m., transforming Main and Broadway streets into an open-air market with more than 200 vendors: farmers, food makers, craftsmen, non-profits and small businesses. The Friday Night Concerts run May 29 through Aug. 28, 2026, 6:30–8:00 PM.
That means the last Friday concert of the year is Aug. 28. After that date, the Thursday market keeps running for another four Thursdays, but the two-night rhythm that defines a Chico summer collapses to one. If you have been telling yourself you will get out to a concert this year, the remaining Fridays are Aug. 7, Aug. 14, Aug. 21, and Aug. 28. Four.
The remaining Thursdays are longer:
- Aug. 6, Aug. 13, Aug. 20, Aug. 27
- Sept. 3, Sept. 10, Sept. 17, Sept. 24
That is a real gap in how you should think about the month. August is the last stretch where the calendar rewards you for coming downtown twice a week.
What August's market actually looks like
The market is not the same event every Thursday this year. The Thursday Night Market is evolving with monthly themed expos hosted in Chico City Plaza, each month featuring a unique theme designed to highlight different industries and celebrate community. Earlier months have run themes like health and wellness, featuring local businesses and practitioners focused on physical, mental and emotional well-being.
This August, the Thursday Night Market is introducing the Wedding & Events Expo in Chico City Plaza. If you have a wedding, a milestone birthday, or a fall event on the calendar, the expo compresses a lot of local vendors into one walk. If you do not, the rest of the market still runs its usual 200-plus booths on Main and Broadway, and the expo is a small side detour rather than the whole night.
A practical note that catches out-of-town guests and newer residents: the market takes place rain or shine, cancelled only if temperatures exceed 110° during market hours, and per CA Health & Safety Code 114259.5, only service animals are permitted. August in Chico occasionally tests that 110° rule. Watch the forecast on the Wednesday before.
Three new tables to know before September
The new dining that opened or is opening this summer changes what a Thursday or Friday evening can look like. Three are worth knowing by name.
Cafe Maria on 5th Street
Cafe Maria opened on Fifth Street in June 2026, a family-run cafe where seven of the nine employees share the same last name, including co-owner and head chef Amparo Saligan, her husband and their five children. If the name Saligan sounds familiar, that is because the grandparents still operate Tacos Mary, a longtime Chico restaurant located just around the corner from Cafe Maria. Two generations, two menus, a one-block walk between them. That is a specific downtown loop you cannot run anywhere else in Butte County.
Gather Cafe and Supper Club, Cohasset Road
Gather is a different kind of night out and worth planning around, not walking into. Gather Cafe and Supper Club, the intimate dining concept founded by chef Sarah Fragoso, is preparing to open a new location at 196 Cohasset Road, Suite 150, in Chico's Garden Villa commercial center, giving the concept a more permanent home as it grows. The reservation-only multi-course concept offers experiences built around seasonal ingredients and local producers, and first launched in 2023 as a supper club offering guests an immersive dining experience rather than a traditional restaurant. This is a Saturday plan, not a Thursday drop-in. Book ahead.
Chico's first Chick-fil-A
Different category, same signal that the food scene here is shifting. Chico's first Chick-fil-A is nearing the finish line at Burney Lane and Forest Avenue, with only a few final inspections remaining, and owner-operator Matthew Hock said the restaurant is still on track to open before the end of the summer. The local angle is worth naming. Hock moved to Chico in 1995 to attend Chico State, where he earned his teaching credential, later taught baseball at Pleasant Valley High School for more than a decade, and spent more than 20 years with the nonprofit Young Life. As opening day approaches, nearly 40 Chick-fil-A trainers from across the country will travel to Chico to help prepare the restaurant and staff for the initial rush.
Expect the drive-through line to be a factor for weeks after opening. Plan the first month around it, not through it.
A working August Thursday, in order
For a resident who wants the whole thing to feel like one evening rather than three errands:
- Park once, near the north end of downtown, by 5:45 PM. Parking gets tight after 6.
- Eat first at Cafe Maria on 5th Street, or grab a taco around the corner at Tacos Mary. Both are faster than trying to eat inside the market at 7.
- Walk into the market on Main or Broadway around 6:30. The 200-plus vendors and live music are the reason to be there, not the food line.
- Cut through City Plaza to catch the August Wedding & Events Expo if it applies to you. If not, keep going.
- End with a coffee or dessert stop. The downtown shops that stay open late are the point of the whole exercise for the businesses that run it.
Friday is simpler. Arrive in City Plaza before 6:30 for the concert, bring a chair, and treat dinner as either a pre-show or a post-show decision. The concert ends at 8:00, which leaves room for either.
After Aug. 28, the pace changes
Once the last Friday concert plays on Aug. 28, September is a different month downtown. The Thursday market keeps its slot for four more weeks. The signature closer is a Sunday, not a Thursday: Taste of Downtown runs Sunday, September 6, 2026, 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM. That is the send-off. If you skipped the market all summer because Thursdays never worked, the Sept. 6 window is the make-up date.
The other thing worth naming for anyone who has lived here more than a year or two: this rhythm is not new, but the shape of it is. The Thursday Night Market has been a Chico favorite for nearly 30 years, bringing the community together for lively summer evenings downtown with local vendors, fresh food and live music. The monthly-expo layer, the new dining anchors on 5th Street and Cohasset Road, and a first-time national chain up at Burney and Forest are all 2026 additions. The bones of a Chico August are old. The details on top of them are new this year, and worth walking through while they are.
If you're new to town
A last piece of orientation for anyone who moved here in the last twelve months and has not yet found their weekly cadence. The market and the concerts are free. City Plaza sits at the center of both. The DCBA runs the events out of 338 Broadway if you have questions, and their event page is the single most current source when something moves or a theme changes.
Everything else on the August calendar is optional and personal. Pick your two Thursdays and your two Fridays before the season narrows. The month is short.
