The old Paradise Pines Golf Course used to set the pace up here. Tee times, twilight rates, a clubhouse that closed when the last group came in. That version of the property is gone. What replaced it isn't a reconstruction. It's a different animal, running on a different calendar, and if you live in Magalia you have probably already noticed the traffic pattern shift on Saturday nights.
The short version: the same 40 acres that used to be private greens are now a public concert lawn, an 18-hole disc golf course, and a walking loop, all stitched together into a summer weekend rhythm that didn't exist five years ago. This post is a working guide to that rhythm for people who already live on the Ridge, with the dates and dollar amounts you actually need.
The Saturday anchor: Music on the Green, ten weeks straight
Magalia Community Park is running Music on the Green every Saturday night from June 13 through August 22, 2026. Ten weeks, ten bands, on the lawn at the old clubhouse. The series is family-friendly, free to attend, and sponsored this year by Explore Butte County, Butte365, the Community Housing Improvement Program, the Rotary Club of Paradise, Sunseri Construction, and Rhonda Mahel Realty.
If you moved to Magalia after 2018, it is worth understanding what this concert lawn actually is. It's the picnic area beside the former golf clubhouse, now the Magalia Community Center, which sits on land the Magalia Community Park nonprofit preserved as permanent green space after the Camp Fire. The building itself is roughly 1,600 square feet of meeting and event space that doubles as a resiliency hub during local emergencies. On a normal Saturday in July, it is a place to bring a lawn chair.
What used to be fairway is now 18 baskets and a paved loop
The 40 acres adjoining the community center became South Pines Disc Golf in October 2020. It is an 18-hole course with more than 70 basket positions that rotate frequently, so the layout you played last summer is not the layout you'll play this weekend. Green fee is a $5 contribution, check in at the pro shop, open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to dusk. It is the only 18-hole disc golf course on the Ridge.
Two things about the course matter for residents who aren't disc golfers. First, the old cart path is still there. It is a 1.8-mile paved loop that functions as the neighborhood walking, biking, and dog-walking track. Second, the park's volunteer crew keeps the 40 acres weed-abated, which means the loop doubles as a maintained fire-safe zone in a community where that matters more than a scorecard ever did.
"Teams of volunteers have been working for a year repairing, updating, cleaning, and clearing the community center and the 40-acre park/disc golf course," Executive Director Chris Rauen said when the site opened. The volunteer model is still how the place runs.
Sunday cadence: the alternating market
The other thing to know about the community park is that Sundays are not identical. The Farmers MarketMobile sets up at Magalia Community Park on the second and fourth Sundays of each month, not every week. If you have been driving over expecting a market on the first Sunday and finding an empty lot, that is why.
Between market Sundays, the same lawn is generally open for a picnic, and the disc golf course keeps its normal 9 a.m. to dusk hours. It is a useful pattern to memorize because it changes what a "Sunday morning on the Ridge" means depending on the calendar week.
Paradise Lake: the day-trip that isn't really a day-trip
For Magalia residents, Paradise Lake is not a destination. It is closer than most Chico grocery runs. But the rules are specific enough that a lot of Ridge residents still get them wrong, so here is the working reference.

The lake is a municipal drinking water supply, which is why the "no dogs, no swimming" rule exists and gets enforced. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife stocks it with rainbow trout, and as of the April 2026 fish report water temperatures had hit the high 50s, with trolled spoons and Rooster Tails producing for boaters and chartreuse Powerbait working from shore. By July, the bass move shallow and the trout drop deeper. The Paradise Recreation & Park District page has the current pass and rental information if you want to buy in advance.
One planning note that matters for households with kids or dogs: because dogs are prohibited even on leash, Paradise Lake is not a "everyone in the car" outing. The disc golf loop back at the community park is where the dog goes.
When you want to be off the Ridge for an evening
Some Saturdays the Music on the Green lineup isn't your thing, or you already used up your outdoor hours on the course. The two closest evening options worth knowing are on opposite ends of the register.
Ten minutes down the hill in Paradise, Theatre on the Ridge stages community productions through the summer and Paradise Performing Arts Center handles ticketed concerts and symphony shows. Both survived the fire and both are running normal seasons in 2026.
Twenty-five minutes down in east Chico, The Barn at Meriam Park runs a summer lineup that is mostly free and mostly outdoors. July 2026 alone brought the Blair Crimmins & The Hookers show on the 17th, the 4th Annual Happy Hippie Summer Festival on the 26th with 50-plus local makers and food vendors, and Trivia Night on the 31st. Doors are usually 5:30, music 6 to 8. It is a different scene than Music on the Green, closer to a beer-garden crowd than a lawn-chair crowd, and worth knowing about on the weeks a Ridge Saturday needs a second act.
A working Ridge summer weekend
If you moved here recently or you are just tired of defaulting to Chico for everything, here is a template that uses the actual 2026 calendar.
- Saturday morning: coffee, then the 1.8-mile loop at Magalia Community Park before the disc golfers show up in force around mid-morning.
- Saturday afternoon: nine holes at South Pines with a $5 green fee, or a paddle at Paradise Lake if it isn't a Wednesday.
- Saturday evening: Music on the Green on the community park lawn. Lawn chairs, a cooler, the kind of dinner you build out of what you brought.
- Sunday morning: on a second or fourth Sunday, the Farmers MarketMobile at the community park. On other Sundays, back to the lake or the disc golf loop.
- Sunday afternoon: a matinee at Theatre on the Ridge if there's a show up, or the drive down to the Barn for a free 6 p.m. music set.
None of that itinerary requires leaving the Upper Ridge for more than an evening, and most of it costs less than a tank of gas.
Why this matters if you already live here
Magalia's summer weekends are no longer defined by what the community lost. They are defined by what a group of neighbors did with 40 acres of former fairway, a clubhouse that needed a new purpose, and a Saturday-night slot on the calendar.
